Ah, surfing. There’s nothing quite like it. The rush of the waves against your board, the wind in your hair or bald head, and the sun warming your skin. It’s no wonder surfing is such a popular sport worldwide. But for beginner surfers, it can be intimidating. Don’t worry, though; I’ve got your back. Here are ten essential tips for beginner surfers that will have you shredding like Kelly Slater in no time… or not. Regardless, you will have fun!

  1. Choose the right board: As a beginner, you want to start with a larger board that provides stability and buoyancy. A longboard is an excellent option – balancing and catching waves is more effortless. Start off by renting a soft top longboard from your local surf shop. Stay away from Costco Wave Storm surfboards (I will write a blog post on wave storms soon).
  2. Get the right wetsuit: The water temperature can vary depending on where you’re surfing. Investing in a wetsuit that keeps your body warm and prevents you from shivering in the line-up is essential. Being cold and trying to learn how to surf is not fun; you won’t enjoy the experience, so make sure you don’t skimp on this!
  3. Practice on the sand: Before you paddle out to the waves, practice popping up to your feet on the sand. This will help you get used to the motion and build muscle memory.
  4. Check the surf report: Before heading out to the beach, check the surf report for the day. This will give you an idea of the wave conditions and help you choose the best time to surf. Surfline is the most popular surf report apps with great information.
  5. Start in smaller waves: It’s tempting to go straight for the bigger waves (sometimes), but it’s essential to start with smaller waves and work your way up. This will help build your confidence and technique.
  6. Watch and learn: Watch the more experienced surfers at the beach. Observe their techniques; a couple of things to watch are where they paddle, position in the line-up, and who are the ones catching all the waves. This will help you learn and improve.
  7. Paddle properly: Paddling is vital to catching waves. Make sure you’re paddling with your arms and not your hands, and keep your head up to see the waves coming.
  8. Take breaks: Surfing is a physical sport, so rest well, drink lots of water, and eat nutritious food. This will prevent injury and exhaustion.
  9. Respect the ocean: The ocean is powerful and unpredictable. Always respect its power and never underestimate it. Follow the surf etiquette and be mindful of other surfers in the water.
  10. Have fun: Most importantly, have fun! Surfing is a thrilling and rewarding sport, and it’s important to enjoy yourself and not take it too seriously. Makes some friends! If you are in the Bay Area consider joining this group.

With these ten essential tips, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a confident and skilled surfer. Remember to choose the right board and wetsuit, practice your pop-up move, and check the surf report before heading out. Start with smaller waves, watch and learn from other surfers, and paddle properly. Take breaks when necessary, respect the power of the ocean, and, most importantly, have fun! Thank you for reading!
